La Conferenza ASITA 2022 è stata l’occasione per lanciare il capitolo italiano di una iniziativa europea presente all’interno di EUROGI, il Focus Group “Women in GI”. All’interno del Policy Portfolio, questa iniziativa ha un duplice obiettivo, fornire l’opportunità alle donne impegnate nel settore geospaziale europeo di fare rete per condividere le proprie esperienze, e sviluppare un policy position paper che possa essere usato da EUROGI, e possibilmente da altre organizzazioni, anche non europee, per promuove l’uguaglianza di genere al proprio interno.
“Women in GI” non è una nuova associazione, né vuole esserlo. Esistono infatti molti gruppi, comunità e associazioni che lavorano, e bene, su questo tema. “Women in GI” è un’occasione per raccogliere informazioni sullo scenario attuale, creare collaborazioni sul tema e confrontarsi con iniziative a livello europeo dando voce alle esigenze locali.
L’iniziativa è aperta alle donne e agli uomini che lavorano in questo settore poiché siamo convinti che per ottenere il cambiamento culturale necessario, lo stereotipo “solo donne” non funziona (più). È necessario discutere della visibilità delle donne nei ruoli decisionali per costruire uguaglianza e rappresentatività a livello senior, è necessario riflettere sul perché l’area STEM stia ancora sperimentando un significativo sbilanciamento di genere e su cosa fare per interrompere questa tendenza. È necessario capire le barriere e i facilitatori nell’educazione e nelle carriere femminili.
Il primo anno di attività a livello europeo ha fatto sì che venissimo a contatto con le molte associazioni esistenti a livello internazionale impegnate su questo tema. Tra le altre, Women in GIS, Women in Copernicus, Women in GeoSpatial+, Ladies in Landsat, African Women in GIS, Women in Remote Sensing, Sisters of SAR, IEEE Women in Geoscience and Remote Sensing, GeoChicas, Women in Aerospace Europe.
La partecipazione al capitolo italiano del Focus Group “Women in GI” è su base volontaria ed il tempo dedicato sarà a beneficio delle attività della rete e dei membri.
Durante la conferenza, abbiamo raccolto l’adesione di ricercatrici, dirigenti, professioniste e studentesse ed ora ci coordineremo con gli altri capitoli europei per costruire una rete europea in grado di agire fattivamente sul proprio territorio di riferimento.

Manifesto
We are hereby committed to the empowerment of all participants in the Geospatial Industry to enable them to accomplish their personal and professional ambitions and goals irrespective of their gender.
In order to promote this commitment, we will:
1) Acknowledge, support, and promote diversity at all levels within EUROGI
In order to advance this matter, we will:
· Promote this Manifesto amongst all members of EUROGI.
· Seek to ensure gender balance in all EUROGI Portfolio Groups and working groups.
2) Actively champion the value and benefits of gender balance
In order to advance this matter, we will:
· Promote the benefits of having a balanced team and show how this can assist in filling industry skills gaps.
· Undertake an outreach programme at schools, universities, and other institutions to highlight the benefits of careers in geospatial.
3) Create a platform for visibility, discussion, and partnerships
In order to advance this matter, we will:
· Produce documents such as papers and discussion notes, hold webinars and give presentations at conferences and other events.
· Seek to collaborate and form partnerships with other organisations in the broadly defined geospatial domain.
4) Voice the achievements of women in geospatial
In order to advance this matter, we will:
· Seek to obtain testimonials, personal stories, and records of personal experiences of women at all levels in different situations, with a particular emphasis on women at senior levels.
· Strive to highlight women who can be regarded as role models in the geospatial sector.
5) Promote and support the establishment of Women in Geospatial initiatives at national level
In order to advance this matter, we will:
· Translate this Manifesto into a variety of European languages as necessary.
· Promote the sharing of experiences between different national initiatives.
This Manifesto was approved by the EUROGI General Board at its meeting on 4 May 2023
